I believe this trend is likely to continue due to the increase in the usage of social media, and if colleges wish to learn more about their students/applicants, they would follow through and look at the profiles of possible students.

A student’s application to a college could be rejected due to the things they’ve said online, or their username. With this in mind, it’s probably best to keep an account that you wouldn't mind anyone seeing to avoid any negative connotations.
